When Michelle Esteppe’s third graders at Danville’s Southwest Elementary School were asked to imagine they were hot-air balloon pilots and design their own balloons, Kodie Barnes didn’t have to think too hard.

A character in the form of a pizza slice and a plasma-projecting dragon were just two of the creative hot-air balloon designs dreamed up by the students in Michelle Esteppe’s third-grade class at Southwest Elementary School.

Every hot air balloon has a name and a unique story on how that name came to be.
